What to Expect When Meeting a Funeral Director for the First Time
Meeting with a funeral director for the first time can feel overwhelming, particularly when a death has just occurred. Most people make funeral arrangements only a few times in their lives and understandably have little idea what to expect.
Knowing what will happen during that first meeting can make the process a little easier.
You Don't Need to Have Everything Figured Out
Before meeting with a funeral director, you do not need to know exactly what kind of funeral or cremation arrangements you want.
Part of a funeral director's role is to explain the choices available, answer your questions, and help you make decisions that are appropriate for your family. A good arrangement meeting should be a conversation, not a sales presentation.
You should also never feel rushed into making decisions. It is perfectly reasonable to ask questions, consider your options, or say that you need some time to think.
What Will We Talk About?
Your funeral director will begin by learning a little about the person who has died and your family's wishes.
Some of the discussion will involve practical matters, such as whether you are considering burial or cremation and whether there will be a funeral, memorial service, viewing, or other gathering.
There will also be administrative details to take care of. Your funeral director will need information about the deceased to complete the registration of death and obtain death certificates. You may be asked about such things as their full legal name, date and place of birth, marital status, occupation, and parents' names.
Don't worry if you don't have every answer. Information can often be provided later.
What Should I Bring?
If available, it can be helpful to bring identification and some basic information about the deceased. Depending upon the arrangements being made, you may also want to bring clothing, a recent photograph, or information about a cemetery, church, clergy member, or other service provider you intend to use.
If you are unsure what to bring, simply ask when making the appointment.
You Will Be Given Information About Costs
Your funeral director should clearly explain the costs associated with the arrangements you are considering. You should have an opportunity to review the available services and merchandise and understand what is included.
Don't hesitate to ask questions about prices or alternatives. Funeral arrangements are both personal and financial decisions, and you should feel comfortable with both.
It's Okay to Ask Questions
There are no foolish questions when arranging a funeral. You may be wondering about cremation, embalming, viewing, what happens at the cemetery, how long everything takes, or something you feel you "should" already know.
The role of a funeral director is to make an unfamiliar process easier to understand. They will will explain your options, answer your questions, and help you make arrangements that are right for you and your family.
