We bid farewell to a remarkable woman whose life was defined by unwavering strength, boundless generosity, and an infectious sense of humour. At 94 years old, Ortenzia leaves behind a legacy built on hard work, love, and a generous spirit that touched everyone who knew her.
Ortenzia’s life began in the small Calabrian village of Albi, on May 18, 1931. She was the second of 5 children. Growing up in rural Calabria during the Second World War, Ortenzia learned early the importance of family, as hardship drew loved ones closer together and taught her the values of loyalty, sacrifice, and caring for one another—principles that guided her throughout her life.
On the urging of her older brother, Salvatore, Ortenzia came to Canada, embracing a new chapter in her life. Here she would eventually marry Filippo, and together they built a life—and a construction business—together. Additionally, she worked for many years at White Spot, where she made many friends. Their eventual retirement was filled with simple joys and well-earned adventures, including trips to Hawaii, Italy, and the Okanagan, often travelling with dear friends and making memories they would talk about for years.
Even in retirement, Ortenzia’s hands were never idle—whether tending her vibrant garden or perfecting her famous homemade sausages and salami, she poured her heart into every task. Gardening brought her a sense of peace and accomplishment, and her expert sausage-making was a cherished family tradition, savoured by all at gatherings and holidays.
She found immense joy in the lives of her nieces and nephews. She cherished every moment spent with them, sharing wisdom, laughter, and the occasional game of Briscola or Scopa . Her generosity knew no bounds, and her home became a haven of warmth and acceptance for family and friends alike.
Her toughness was legendary—she faced life’s challenges with grit and determination, earning the admiration of all who crossed her path. Yet beneath that tough exterior was a heart full of compassion and a wit that brought joy and laughter to every room she entered.
We will greatly miss our beloved Zia Ortenzia-she was one of a kind and her passing leaves a huge void in our lives. She is pre-deceased by her infant son, her husband Filippo, her sisters, Teresa and Lina, and her brother, Salvatore. She is survived by her brother, Edmondo (Emilia), sister-in-law Pina, and many adoring nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and countless friends and cousins who will forever remember her generosity, resilience, and laughter. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she loved and in the traditions, she leaves behind.
