It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, Anne Sedmak, on August 30, 2026, after a brief visit at Peace Arch Hospital and Laurel Place.  She was 93.

Predeceased by daughter Linda, daughter-in-law Dawn, grandson Michael, brothers Bob and John, sister Mary, and sisters-in-law Margaret and Betty.

Born as Ann, from Slovak immigrant parents, Paul and Mary, she took a page from L.M. Montgomery’s book Anne of Green Gables and added an e to her name as it “looks so much more distinguished”.  A voracious reader, but with availability of books scarce, she happily read even the dictionary and encyclopedias of the time.  Growing up during the Depression and World War II, she learned early the importance of faith, family, and friends – she cherished all throughout her long years.

Married for almost 75 years to her beloved husband, Steve, they created a rich life together with their children, filled with love, family get-togethers, and numerous camping and road trips, including a multi week road trip across Canada.  In later years, they enjoyed their travels with family to Disneyland, Hawaii, and even saw and visited for the first time their “home country” of Slovakia to visit with long-lost family and see the small villages of their parents.

Anne had a beautiful singing voice, and sung at many church masses as well as in kitchens.  Although never in the church choir, she harmonized beautifully with her husband, co-workers in the kitchen at Kwantlen College, or along with the church congregation.

However, one of her most talented gifts was her ability to cook and bake.  Anne was happiest singing in her kitchen, whipping up both savoury and sweet culinary delights to feed her family.  She perfected the cultural delights of her heritage, like haluski, sauerkraut soup, and poppy seed rolls, but also expanded her recipe book to include North American, French, German, and East Indian fare.  No one will ever forget her breaded veal cutlets, homemade yeast doughnuts, or cream puffs.

Lovingly survived by her husband Steve; children Mike (Dianna), Steven, Mark, David, and Kathryn (Daren); brother Emil; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  She will be greatly missed.

Service Details:

Prayers will start the day’s ceremony at Immaculate Conception Church (8842 119 Street, Delta, British Columbia) on Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at 9:30 am. 

Funeral Mass will being at 10:30 am.

Reception Luncheon to follow.

Burial Service will conclude the ceremony at the Gardens of Gethsemani Cemetery (15694 32 Avenue, Surrey, British Columbia) at 2:00 pm.
