Pre-Planning a Funeral: Benefits and Considerations

Most of us don’t want to think about death; it can be an uncomfortable subject and is part of our human nature not to. However, there are tangible benefits that surround thinking about your own wishes and we hope to provide you with some tips and considerations for preplanning funerals.

The most notable benefit is that it can remove pressure and stress from both you and your loved ones. Between 70 and 75 decisions are made within the first 24 to 48 hours of death and these can take a toll on the loved ones of the deceased. A preplanned funeral can remove the stress and fatigue of decision making in the wake of yor death. It can also help you alleviate concerns about your own mortality, as you won’t have to worry about your family coping with the funeral arrangements in addition to your passing. Your loved ones will also know for sure what your wishes for your funeral are, as you were involved in the planning process and have had input every step of the way.

Arbutus Funeral Service offers funeral preplanning where you can discuss your wishes with one of our knowledgeable and caring funeral professionals. We also have a simple online form that you can use to get the process started. This will allow you to make decisions like whether you would prefer to be buried or cremated, what type of urn or casket you want, what type of service you want and who you want your pallbearers to be, flowers preferred, clothing to be dressed in, etc.. You can also detail any music or readings you want to accompany the service.

Preplanning a funeral can also convey some financial advantages as your funeral can be prepaid while you are still alive, giving you and your family a firm idea of the costs associated with the funeral. When you preplan a funeral, our helpful funeral planners can coordinate a payment plan, from a single payment to a monthly payment plan using either direct withdrawal from your bank account or through a credit card. Furthermore, the funds you designate for your funeral are held in a trust account until the funeral itself occurs, locking in the funeral home costs and preventing any increases. Cash disbursements such as death certificates, church fees, Consumer Protection BC administration fee are subject to change as they are controlled by these different providers.  Prepaying the current fee charged minimizes the amount required at the time of death.

We plan extensively for many other events in our lives, from births to weddings, and it always makes those events easier, funerals are no different. We hope that this short guide has illustrated the advantages of preplanning your funeral and hope that you will contact our helpful staff should you require such services.
