Tips For Making It Through The Holiday Season When You Feel Depressed

Every person experiences grief and sorrow in different ways. They also heal at a different pace, and there are no specific timelines of patterns that people follow when they are recovering from grief.

Sometimes the feeling of extreme sorrow can surface many months or years after the person has passed away. You feel the loss of loved one more acutely during the holiday season. Here are some tips that can help you through this time, when you are feeling depressed:

  • If you think that you are not up to socializing or spending time with family and friends, you can always choose to say no. Sometimes it can be tough for you to attend a family gathering for a holiday party as it can trigger grief. However, if you feel extremely overwhelmed with the idea of spending time with a group of people, there is no need to feel guilty about refusing to attend these events.

  • It can also be challenging to get rid of depression during the holidays, and you might not be able to manage your grief and sorrow on your own. In situations such as these, you can consult a therapist, and the person would help you through your grief. If you feel that you need to get away from it all, try to find a travel companion that you can spend some time with and move away from your home setting during the holiday season. The distance from familiar surroundings may help you deal with your depression in a better way.

  • Not everyone does exceedingly well by being away from their family. Sometimes, being around other people that also care about your loved one that has passed away, can help you feel calmer and help you heal. You should consider attending some small private events with close family members if that's what works for you during the holidays.
