Healing After A Loved One’s Suicide

When a loved one dies due to suicide, it can leave you in a lot of pain and overwhelm you significantly. The feelings of grief, frustration, anger, and disbelief may all come crashing down on you and leave you feeling unsettled and exhausted. You may feel guilt wash over you, which leaves you wondering whether there was anything you could have done to prevent the death of your loved one.

The Healing Process

It isn't uncommon for people to find that they have to deal with the stigma of suicide as well. Many find it difficult to discuss the topic of suicide, and they may not reach out to you at all. In situations such as these, you might find yourself feeling extremely abandoned or isolated.

The support that you expected from people close to you might not be there at all, especially when you needed it the most. There are times when certain religions also limit the types of rituals that are available to individuals that have died by suicide. If you are keen on conducting these rituals, you might feel a sense of deprivation because these tools that could help you cope with your grief, aren’t available to you.

Things To Do

It isn't easy to deal with what comes in the wake of a loved one’s suicide, and you may feel emotionally and physically exhausted. In a situation such as this:

  • Reach out to a close friend, family, or even a spiritual leader for some comfort.
  • Spend time with people that understand you and are willing to offer a shoulder and an ear.
  • Give yourself some time to heal. Learn that you don’t have to toe the line when it comes to healing at a certain pace.
  • Recognize when you need to seek professional help, especially if you are very depressed or unable to cope with your feelings of sorrow.
