Funeral Etiquette 101

Attending a funeral can be scary for some people and other people may be a nervous wreck. This is especially true if they have not attended a funeral before. For those who are attending their first funeral as an adult, or for those who just need a refresher, here are a few funeral etiquette tips to keep in mind!

What Not to Do at a Funeral

There are several things that you will want to avoid doing while at a funeral. These include:

  • Do not answer your cell phone
  • Do not text or use Facebook during the funeral, avoid taking pictures with your cell
  • Do not ask about who is getting what of the late person’s personal items
  • Do not ask about the cause of death. If you need to know, someone will let you know.

What You Should Do at a Funeral

Here are the things that you can do and are often appreciated:

  • Express your sympathy to those who have lost their family member
  • Share your memories about the deceased, something that is funny or showcases the person in a great light is the best option.
  • Offer the family member help or assistance in dealing with anything that they may need.
  • Bring a gift of food to the family as they are probably busy with all the arrangements that are being made.
  • Be sure to dress appropriately when attending the funeral and the visitation.
  • You can send a gift of sympathy such as flowers to the funeral home that will be later given to the family.
Funeral etiquette is often about just being respectful of those who have lost a loved one. And being on your best behavior.
