Choosing a Casket

November 9th, 2018
Choosing a Casket

One of the most important aspects in a funeral arrangement is the choice of a casket. A large part of the budget is determined by the cost of the casket. The price range is very wide from about $900 for a simple metal or wooden piece to very expensive gold plated caskets, costing above $40,000.00. Most people may prefer caskets priced between $2500 and $4000.

The decision to buy a casket often becomes the responsibility of the near and dear ones of the deceased. Since they are grieving, it is more of an emotional decision rather than a financial and practical one. Yet it is important to consider various aspects like material of the casket, durability and costs.

Casket Types

Metal and wood are the two popular materials used in making caskets. A sealing key is used in metal caskets to ensure that it is closed securely. These are also gasketed to avoid water seeping into them. However, wood caskets do not need such a sealing key.

Metal Caskets

Metals are prone to rusting making it necessary to choose the correct metals. The three popular metals used are:

  1. Stainless steel
  2. Bronze
  3. Copper

Caskets made of rolled steel come in various gauges (thickness). Lower gauge steel is thinner and cheaper while thicker steel and a higher standard of workmanship attracts a higher price.

Wood Caskets

People choose wood caskets for their polish, finish, elegance and workmanship, The choice of hard and soft woods is fairly wide such as :

  • Mahogany
  • Walnut
  • Oak
  • Cherry
  • Pine

Most funeral homes also offer caskets to rent and that can be an affordable option for people on a budget. For information about our services, just contact us or give us a call (604) 888-9895. We at Arbutus Funeral Services will be happy to help with all the funeral arrangements you need.
