4 Funeral Etiquette Tips You Need to Know

Attending funerals is a way to say goodbye to a deceased friend or acquaintance and offering comfort to grieving individuals. It shows people the decedent was well-loved, which offers some consolation in this difficult time. At Arbutus Funeral Service, we recommend following these four tips to ensure attending the event doesn’t cause unnecessary strain:

1. Dress For the Occasion

Showing up at a funeral in a pair of jeans and a T-shirt is disrespectful. While the color of clothes or your style shouldn’t matter, it does say a lot. Black formal clothes in a modest design look respectful and are suitable for such a somber gathering. Make sure you’re dressed well but in serious colors and monochromatic tones.

2. Arrive Early

It’s never a good idea to turn up late at a funeral. We recommend arriving at least 10 to 15 minutes before the service is due to start. Make note of traffic conditions and any detours that might delay you before planning the trip. If you are late, grab a seat at the back to avoid causing any disruption.

3. Don’t Take Calls

Keep your mobile phone switched off or on silent because taking calls or even looking at messages during a funeral service is disrespectful. If you absolutely must take a call, step outside discreetly and don’t come back in until the service is over.

4. Choose the Right Words

Offering condolences might seem easy, but many people blurt out ill-advised words that offer no comfort but can hurt grieving individuals. If you don’t know what to say, just offer something like “I’m sorry for your loss, is there any way I can help?” Such condolences offer comfort and showcase your support as well.
